Movie Nite showcasing- "Chokher Bali"

Friday, August 29,

Time : 7:00 p.m onwards

Chokher Bali literally "Sand in the Eye", equivalent to eye-sore, is a Bengali novel written by Rabindranath Tagore (Asia's first Nobel laureate when he won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature)

Critical Acclaim : Tagore elaborately records early 20th century Bengali society in India, through his central character, the rebellious widow, who wants to live a life of her own. In writing this novel he exposes the custom of perpetual mourning on the part of widows, who were not allowed to remarry and were condemned to a life of seclusion and loneliness. It is a melancholy, stirring tale of the deceit and sorrow that arise from dissatisfaction and sorrow. Tagore has said about the novel, "I have always regretted the ending".

The novel was adapted into a 2003 film and stars former Ms. World Aishwarya Rai, Prasenjit Chatterjee and Raima Sen.  Have fun with us at Movie nite.

ABOUT DEEP ECOLOGY AND THE PROGRAM

•     Deep Ecology is the belief that humanity is part of the earth and not separate from it, and that planetary and personal well-being are deeply intertwined.

•     Joanna Macy developed “The Work that Reconnects”, a path-breaking approach to re-visioning how we live in relation to the earth and each other.

From global economics to global warming – it’s no secret that humanity faces a world-wide crisis of our own creation.

Perhaps less well known are the many ways people are gathering to create new ways of living with each other and in collaboration with our planet. Macy calls this process “The Great Turning” and describes it as, “the essential adventure of our time: the shift from the industrial growth society to a life-sustaining civilizati on.”

According to Macy, “The central purpose of the Work that Reconnects is to help people uncover and experience their innate connections with each other and with the systemic, self-healing powers in the web of life, so that they may be enlivened and motivated to play their part in creating a sustainable civilization.”
